The IEA has published a report, ‘Building the Future Transmission Grid – Strategies to navigate supply chain challenges’, which stresses that the development of transmission infrastructure is essential for energy security and ensuring electricity supply.

The European Commission has published the ‘Omnibus’ package, which aims to simplify sustainability reporting (CSRD), the due diligence directive (CSDDD) and taxonomy.

On the occasion of the Munich Security Conference on 14 February, Eurelectric published a new study ‘Redefining Energy Security In the Age of Electricity’.

The European Commission today published a communication entitled ‘A Competitiveness Compass for the EU’, following Mario Draghi’s report ‘The Future of European Competitiveness’, emphasising the urgent need for Europe to strengthen its competitiveness in order to ensure future prosperity.

The World Economic Forum has released a new report, “Unleashing the Full Potential of Industrial Clusters: Infrastructure Solutions for Clean Energies,” which explores how industrial clusters can accelerate the deployment of clean energy infrastructure through strategic collaboration.

The World Economic Forum’s report, “The Global Risks Report 2025”, now in its 20th edition, was launched today. Geopolitical, social and technological issues dominate the top 10 short-term risks and environmental risks predominate in the long term.

Disinformation and extreme weather events remain at the top of the list of global risks compared to 2024, but the risks associated with armed conflicts between states also appear in the top three.

The International Energy Agency has published the “World Energy Outlook 2024: The Age of Electricity” which presents new figures and perspectives on the evolution of the energy sector at a global level, as well as analyses and results in terms of market trends, the evolution of the geopolitical context, emerging technologies, the transition to clean energies, and the impact on security of supply and climate change.

Eurelectric has launched the new edition of the Power Barometer 2024. According to this edition, the electricity sector has seen the biggest ever relative decrease in GHG emissions compared to other sectors, such as manufacturing or transport. In 2023, a 50% cut in these emissions was achieved (compared to 2008), confirming the electricity sector’s leadership in decarbonization at European level.

On 17 September, in conjunction with the announcement of the list of candidates for European Commissioner, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, shared the Mission Letters sent to each Commissioner, setting out their vision for the next mandate, as well as each Commissioner’s priorities.

On 11 September, the European Commission published the ‘State of the Energy Union 2024’ report, which presents the challenges and progress made in the European energy landscape over the past year.
The report highlights the EU’s progress on energy security and the transition to clean energy, despite geopolitical crises. It recognises challenges such as energy poverty and the need for more ambitious renewable energy and energy efficiency targets, and calls for greater coordination between Member States to achieve climate and energy goals by 2030.

Launched on 9 September, Mario Draghi’s report addresses several important transformations that Europe needs to face in order to maintain its global competitiveness. The energy sector is seen as a central pillar in guaranteeing Europe’s future competitiveness, requiring a coordinated effort in innovation, sustainability and public policies to ensure both energy security and economic growth.

On 19 July, the IEA – International Energy Agency published the report ‘Electricity Mid-Year Update: July 2024’ with the six-monthly update of the report ‘Electricity 2024’, published in January, which analyses the latest developments in the energy sector and the main markets.

The Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and the European Council of Energy Regulators (CEER) have published a position paper on ‘Challenges of the future electricity system’. This document contains 5 commitments and 16 recommendations for the EU as a whole and for Member States to actively promote the necessary transformation.

The European Council of 27-28 June adopted the EU’s Strategic Agenda for the next cycle 2024-2029. Based on three pillars (a free and democratic Europe; a strong and secure Europe; a prosperous and competitive Europe), it emphasises the commitment to making the green and digital transition a success, as well as strengthening competitiveness.

EURELECTRIC has launched, in partnership with WSP, a guidebook for the development and implementation of electricity grid and renewable energy projects in harmony with nature. The guidebook presents 12 fundamental principles for promoting biodiversity and includes case studies as well as practical recommendations that developers should apply when choosing the location, planning, implementing, operating, decommissioning and dismantling projects.

On 24 May, Eurelectric published the ‘Wired for tomorrow’ study, which assesses the digital maturity of DSOs across construction, operation and maintenance resources, based on information from more than 31 DSOs covering more than 80M customers in 21 countries.

Wired4Tomorrow outlines a roadmap for how DSOs can harness digital technologies to strengthen network capacity, efficiency and resilience, paving the way for a sustainable energy future.

On 22 May, during the Power Summit 2024, EURELECTRIC presented the ‘Grids4Speed’ study, which places grid infrastructures at the centre of the electrification path towards climate neutrality, highlighting the challenges, necessary investments and strategies to ‘make it happen’.

The International Energy Agency’s report ‘Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions’ emphasises the fundamental role that batteries will play in meeting the established commitments and the 2030 energy and climate targets to put the global energy system on the path to carbon neutrality. The report also highlights the sharp reduction in battery costs since 2010.

On 18 April, the World Energy Council published the ‘World Energy Scenario Foundations 2024’ report, which presents new scenarios for 2050, based on the scenarios presented at the 2019 World Energy Council and considering global changes in the climate, economy and energy sector in recent years.

On 29 February 2024, EURELECTRIC published a Position Paper focused on the Regulation (EU) on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action, highlighting the relevance of its revision, including the National Energy and Climate Plans, with the recommendation to include indicators related to the electrification rate, among other points.

On 6 February 2024, the European Commission presented a recommendation for a Europe-wide climate target for 2040. The Commission recommended reducing the EU’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 90 % by 2040 compared to 1990.

On 14 December 2023, EURELECTRIC published a manifesto identifying five priority areas for the next legislative term, following the European elections in June 2024: (1) deployment; (2) electrification for decarbonisation; (3) security of supply; (4) expansion and digitalisation of electricity networks; (5) consumers.
